Watching movies after work

I received an e-mail from a really good friend from high school today. She wrote about this movie she saw “mr and mrs smith” and how she liked it and all. She asked me if I saw any good movies lately. There’s two recent movies I was hoping to watch though, one of them is this willie wonka remake and the other is this movie about some really cool fighter plane that went berserk on its own, but I never got to see either movies.

I don’t seem to enjoy going to the movies lately. With our country’s economy fast becoming like crap, movie tickets became 20 bucks more expensive, and that’s almost the price of one beer, and not only that movie tickets have gone up, the theaters here have also axed their 9pm screening time to save on costs. That sucked, I used to like watching movies late because I’m usually home before 8pm , and there’s this great movie theater about two blocks away from home, I can just walk to the theaters to catch the shows that screen past 9, then I could take a great evening walk on the way home. Even if I wasted my cash on some really terrible movie, the walk back home would make me feel a little better, I could go walking off the sidewalk because it would be around midnight and there’s not much cars on the road, and the dead silence can be so depressing, but it does make me feel good anyway.

Now the last time slots for screening movies in those theaters are slated somewhere around 7pm, and the only way I could catch a movie at that time is if I take off from work before closing time. Fortunately there hasn’t been any good movies coming that would be reason enough for me to take off from work early, not even that wonka remake, one thing I feel about that movie is that the story would be no different from the older version I saw when I was a kid, maybe except for the new wonka character who seems to be a lot goofier. There’s this upcoming king kong movie I want to see though, its not much of a remake since the directors took the oversized ape franchise to some jurrasic island where in the movie trailer, they left the ape going head to head with a t-rex, rather than thrashing around some big city like in the older movies. But city-thrashing has always been the essence of a king kong movie, so I bet he wouldn't miss that one out.

Better start thinking on how the hell can I see that ape movie in the theaters soon.

Doom 3

It rained the whole week last week. There was not much to do at work with this kind of weather, it was pretty depressing and this boredom dragged and bled time.

Though it stopped raining this week, I got this PC game Doom 3 for a little amusement. It’s a game about a marine trapped inside a research facility in Mars fighting his way out while the place is crawling up with demons, and what was so interesting is that this game is rated for mature players only because there is too much violence and realistic gore in the gameplay. I had this feeling this game is going to be good, sick good, and besides I need this game to get in touch with my violent side.

I played it the night after I got it and hell, it is awesome. The demons you shot around the place looked like they were pulled right out of a psychopath’s imagination, and what gave me the creeps was that most of the martian facility I was running around was dark, I had this flashlight that I used to light up my way, and most often there was something in the dark that will freak you off.

Hibakushas from the Manhattan Project

Hoping to end the pacific front of world war 2 quickly, Truman ordered the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. It happened on this day, 60 years ago.

Recollections of August 6, 1945
Iwao Nakamura, survivor
5th Grade Boy at the time

In an instant it became dark as night, Hiroshima on that day. Flames shooting up from wrecked houses as if to illuminate this darkness. Amidst this, children aimlessly wandering about, groaning with pain, their burned faces twitching and bloated like balloons. An old man, skin flaking off like the skin of a potato, trying to get away on weak, unsteady legs, praying as he went. A man frantically calling out the names of his wife and children, both hands to the forehead from which blood trickled down.

On a lighter side, Ariel dropped by our office today. Ariel is a good friend from college, and incidentally too, his last name is “imperial” which is very synonymous with the Japanese Imperial Army of world war 2 which what the atomic bomb was used to force their surrender exactly 60 years ago. Ariel worked in dumaguete city (read almost like the devil saying “Doomed, I’ll get thee!”) and I was surprised to see him pop up in Iloilo city today. He told me he got reassigned here after one of his fellow field agents here was caught dead with a heart attack. Ariel’s reassignment came swift after he got in the news himself in dumaguete city when he drove his car off a bridge. He wasn’t drunk and lucky bastard was able to come up to my office in one piece.

Way to go dude!

It grew on my left ankle

I have this growing irritation on my left ankle, I don’t know what it is but it itches like hell. My mother suggested I go to this skin doctor she heard from her friends. I took the morning off and got to her clinic, it was a rainy Monday morning anyway and the rainy mood made me feel a little lazy for work.

The doctor had a small clinic, I sat and waited for my turn in this bench which was good for about five people. There were a lot of rich old women going about the place, you could hear them talk about their darling grandsons and those little golden trinkets hanging by their skins which they have little lifetime to brag about in their old age. It was like the golden girls’ tea party by the clinic. Then an old lady in a wheelchair crossed the clinic, I think her skin problems were these warts she kept pointing at both her arms. She should have learned somewhere that warts come with old age, and besides her wrinkled skin hid most of the warts anyway, but guess it still bothered her that much since that’s what she gets to stare at all day long in her wheelchair. She stopped in front of me while she asked for her medical bills from the clinic’s receptionist. She had to call one of her nannies to read the bill to her since she couldn’t probably see things clear at her age too, maybe except for her warts.

“one thousand pipti!” her nanny exclaimed

“feeef-teeee! (fifty)” she yelled as she tried to correct her nanny’s funny accent in speaking English, at least her hearing is still intact. Her nanny tried to get away with her embarrassment, she saw that my feet was on her master’s wheelchair’s path and though they were not yet leaving, she called to me to get out of the way. Goddam lady was rude and she felt like I were her fellow servant babysitting my own old master to that clinic, but I need not mind her because she has problems, like her accent. I stood up and went outside the clinic, I wanted to go out and get some air anyway, and there was this cute girl using the phone right outside the clinic too.

I went inside the doctor’s room came my turn. She was about in her mid 40’s and she was reading the forms I filled up earlier when I got inside, perhaps trying to think of how to start the ball rolling with me. I pulled my socks down and showed her my ankle. She didn’t give much look at it, she said it was a licheny something. She typed it down her computer and it showed me a slide show about the ankle irritation I had. Then a picture appeared on the screen, it was almost the same as the one I had in my ankle but a little worse, and the poor schlep in the picture had it right above his penis. I didn’t know if I were supposed to ask the doctor about it laughing, I just told her that it grew nowhere else except on my ankle.

Hell I should be happy it grew on my ankle.
